Sure, most of the time it’s fun to just hang out at a stylish café with a friend or two, sipping on your coffees and catching up with each other all night. But it might get more than a little boring if you do that every single time, right? The solution to that problem is to visit a café where you can have fun while you eat, of course! Loads of cafés in KL provide you with fun activities to do while munching on your snacks, from playing board games to painting to even sewing! Here’s a list of a few cafés in KL that do just that:

Lorem Ipsum, Bangsar

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFvMd6yx04W/?taken-at=486293827

At Lorem Ipsum, patrons can participate in their daily ‘art jamming’ sessions while sipping on your glass of ice cold coffee. Don’t know what an art jam is? It’s when you’re free to express yourself with a paintbrush and an easel, and many find it quite a fun activity! For RM120, you get to spend three hours letting out your inner Matisse or Picasso, with all art supplies provided of course. They’ll even throw in one coffee or tea for you to drink while gathering inspiration for your painting, and you can bring your artwork back home with you! But if you prefer having some direction, Lorem Ipsum also organizes art classes too, like watercolour workshops, acrylic painting lessons, or even children’s craft workshops. Time to whip out those palettes and let your creative juices flow!

Address: 59-1, Jalan Bangkung, Bukit Bandaraya, 59100 Kuala Lumpur

Hours: 8am-7pm daily

Green Tomato Café, Jalan Ritchie

This homey, garden-style café on Jalan Ritchie is not only known for their fresh, healthy food, but also for the myriad activities and workshops that they organize every once in a while. You can even book workshops for you and your friends, or for a class or company activity! Some of their past activities include batik, tie-dye, coffee art, painting, jewelery-making, and soap-making workshops, so there should be something interesting for everyone! And the kampong-like bungalow and lush greenery all around makes the perfect backdrop for your fun, creative activities!

Address: Yayasan Seni, 333, Persiaran Ritchie off Jalan Ritchie, 55000 Kuala Lumpur

Hours: 8am-5pm daily

Tel: 012-388 7343 / 016-220 1390 / 03-4251 5154

Hobby N Coffee, TTDI

This hidden gem of a café serves up your standard coffees and titbits, but they also specialize in two things. Latte art classes and sewing workshops. Even though the two are completely unrelated, Hobby N Coffee manage to excel in both, and their ever-popular coffee art demonstrations and various sewing lessons make that very clear.

Apparently, the couple who owns the café brought together their two (very different) passions, sewing and coffee, to come up with what is now Hobby N Coffee. Cute! And if you want to join a class but are worried you won’t be able to pick up the skill, don’t worry, all of their classes are quite small so you’ll get plenty of hands-on instruction from the teachers. If you don’t feel like doing either, they even have an assortment of cool board games to choose from! So if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to draw a Pikachu on your coffee, or sew a totebag all by yourself, this is the place to go.

Address: 1st Floor, 12 Jalan Mohd Fuad 2, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur

Hours: Depends on the activities for the day (check their website for more info)

Tel: +603-7731 6602 (only during activities)

Clayci Art Café, PJ

Okay, this one isn’t really a café, but it’s cool so I’ll put it on this list anyway. You might not be able to actually eat anything at Clayci Art and Clay Centre, but you will be able to make your own food. Out of clay. In miniature size. You know those gimmicky, food-shaped erasers you can find at places like Daiso? Yup, that’s what you’ll be making (but out of clay instead of rubber, so don’t go rubbing it on paper!). Clayci is known for their ultra-realistic depictions of food, albeit at the size of a coin! You’ll be able to join classes to learn how to create these yourself, and past classes include learning how to ‘make’ Penang assam laksa, nyonya kuih, Japanese bento, mooncakes, yong tao foo, etc., etc. They’re even selling DIY clay packs, so you can attempt to create all these glorious foods at home!

Address: No 26, Jalan 19/31, 46300 Petaling Jaya

I’m sure some of you have heard of DR.inc, a unique café in Bangsar that serves all kinds of interesting dishes and coffee while surrounded by cool artwork and handicrafts. Even the exterior of the café beckons the curious onlooker inside, and the artistic, cozy interior will make anyone stay a while! W.inc, a workshop initiative that takes place on the open space above the café, conducts bespoke lessons regularly on skills like silkscreening, freestyle painting, and watercolouring. You’ll be able to take part in exciting workshops while nibbling on tasty treats from DR.inc downstairs! They’ve even opened up an art academy, TH.inc, that will hold art and design courses so you can actually become a full-time designer if you so pleased!

Address: 8 Jalan Kemuja, 59000 Kuala Lumpur

Hours: 9am-7pm on Sun-Mon, 9am-1am on Tues-Sat

Tel: 03-2283 4698

The Border City Café and Board Games, Sunway Giza Mall

Prepare to obliterate your friends in a round of your favourite board game! The Border City Café provides about 100 board games for you to choose from, so you can have a whale of a time while sipping on their hot beverages, or snacking on their freshly made waffles. They’ve even introduced lunch sets recently, so you can have a full meal while playing! Their board game selection is nothing to scoff at, including crowd-pleasers like Coup, Blokus, Ubongo, and Saboteur. Make sure to bring lots of friends with you, but we all know that board games are notorious for breaking friendships, so be prepared for lots of screaming, table-flipping, and excitement!
