The purpose of having a guarded neighbourhood is to ensure the safety of our family and to keep them from harm’s way. Still, a woman in TTDI experienced a close call with a vicious robbery attack on October 5 in her secured residential area. Facebook user, Lee Hai Lin recounted the harrowing incident with a man who tried to rob her at knife point. Thankfully, Hai Lin escaped unharmed and the robber’s intention of robbing the woman of her possessions, including a violin, was foiled.

Here’s a full account of what happened to Hai Lin on the night of October 5:

It is clear that what Hai Lin went through that evening is not a foreign experience in Malaysia. She was almost too unnerved and did not want to recount the experience on Facebook but she shared, “People need to know, the state of what our country and the people in it has become. And we need to fight it. Not by violence – but through intelligence, community collaboration and spirit.”

She noted how she personally does not want to live a life filled with constant fear and paranoia. “Is it not unreasonable to expect to walk 5 meters to one’s front door without incident, in a secured residential area? What kind of people does it make us, when our automatic reaction is to regard other people as threats? As a good friend aptly put it- ‘It makes us people under siege. Suspicious and paranoid people.’  That is no way to live life.”

The night could have ended differently but the fact that Hai Lin and her husband, alongside their neighbours, escaped unharmed was a true miracle. The fact that it happened in a secured residential area poses as another problem for Malaysians. What do we have to do to ensure safety nowadays?

Hai Lin’s parting thoughts were: “I took safety and life for granted before but I am a little wiser after this. The biggest take back for me, which I want to share with you, would have to be: We must do our part, or evil will continue to thrive.”

What are your thoughts on this matter?
