They are not a typical hair salon and you might leave it feeling a little tipsy—if not for the kick you get with your brand new hairstyle, then for the alcohol served at the salon’s bar.

Exclusively for clients only, Koiyak Hair Studio in Taman Connaught is helmed by a creative hair mastermind named Le’o. The founder of Koiyak Hair Studio has more than 10 years experience with the scissors, and was once even invited as a guest speaker in Indonesia, for his experience in the industry.

Le’o specialises in turning plain ol’ boring hair into works of art, and after gaining experience working with others, he chose to transfer his knowledge into his self-owned hair studio, Koiyak.

The name Koiyak is derived from a glove brand which interestingly enough, is known as the ultimate tool in the tattooing industry. Koiyak Hair Studio is the first industry that the brand has dived into aside from tattooing, and Le’o told Discover KL just why it is so.

Le’o shared, “The story behind the glove brand is personal. It’s about single use and hygiene. I think every industry is looking for that now as well. Especially as a hairdresser, we work very closely with you and there is skin contact. Hence hygiene is crucial. Before you have your colours, you need to have your equipment and knowledge. You need something that can drive you there.”

And the Koiyak gloves helps bring the hair studio exactly where they intend to go—up.

The bar, on the other hand, is a way for Le’o to lend a chilled out vibe to the experience of getting one’s hair done. “I’m very particular about not rushing especially when someone is getting their hair done,” Le’o said with a smile. Whether it’s coffee, tea, or a dram of alcohol, the salon has got that covered, and you’re not charged for it.

Le’o places a very high value on his regular clients who often return to him for his creative hair style designs. For these clients, he intends to give the ultimate VIP treatment that they deserve, and it’s not just about the drinks.

“After all, if you want to drink, you can go anywhere,” Le’o added, tongue in cheek.

Getting to know a client’s individual taste and preference requires time and attention, and that good rapport is what Le’o wants to prioritise.

It’s more about setting Koiyak apart from the saturated hair industry in Malaysia, and to offer a more personal and bespoke experience for his clients. Because that is something that appreciative clients would definitely toast to.
