Selangor will be embracing a greener 2017 with the implementation on the new 20 cent per plastic bag rule. Previously, shoppers would only be required to pay 20 cent per plastic bag on Saturdays, but it will now be implemented each and every time a customer requests for a plastic bag. The funds from the plastic bag will be given to charity bodies and recycling programmes.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Selangor vendors will no longer provide polystyrene packages and plastic bags for free, beginning New Year’s Day. This is to increase the public awareness on the plastic-free campaign. On top of the plastic bag-free campaign, next year would also see a polystyrene-free Selangor as well.

The plastic bag free Saturday campaign begun back in 2010 and the fact that Selangor will see an eco-friendly beginning for 2017 is certainly a step forward in the right direction.
