Sometimes we just need a little something special to spice up our lives, and we want to indulge in a luxurious meal like a traditional English afternoon tea. Those three-tier plates laden with sweet goodies historically signifies lavishness, and that mindset still carries over till today. But then we remember that we’re broke and we don’t have too much to spend for a single meal. Worry not, for there are a number of places that serve up afternoon tea sets for reasonable prices so you won’t burn a hole in your wallet. Bring along some friends and you can split the bill and make it even cheaper. Check out the following restaurants that serve afternoon tea for less than RM60 per person:

Tea Lounge, The Majestic Hotel

This colonial-style hotel is well-known for their classic atmosphere and luxurious dining options, and their afternoon tea is no exception. You can choose to have your afternoon tea in four different locations within the hotel, the Tea Lounge (RM58), Colonial Café (RM58), the Drawing Room (RM78), or the famous Orchid Conservatory (RM108). At the Tea Lounge, you’ll be able to sit on regal sofas in the sumptuous setting of the restaurant, and enjoy your afternoon tea in style. Their afternoon tea sets have a Malaysian twist, because not only do that serve the usual buttery scones and dainty cakes and pastries, they also incorporate local delicacies like fried mantau buns and lamb curry puffs. Be sure to make a reservation beforehand though, this place gets busy on the weekends!

Newens Tea House, Starhill Gallery

This historic tea house that originated from the land of afternoon tea itself, England, has been around for 150 years, so you know that they’ve perfected their recipes and will only serve up the best for their patrons. Their afternoon tea set for two (RM60) consists of traditional English scones served with clotted cream and preserves, a pot of tea (choose between 60 kinds!), and their ultimate specialty: Maids of Honour. If you’re wondering what a Maid of Honour is, it’s a highly-exclusive pastry that was favoured by King Henry VIII himself, and its recipe is heavily guarded because of how delicious it tastes. You be the judge of that yourself!

Their afternoon tea set changes every week, with sweet treats and savoury bites to tide you over. Past offerings include classic French desserts like lemon madeleines, pain au chocolat, cannele de Bordeaux, and passion fruit entremets.
