You would likely wear a look of disgust on your face at what you’re about to hear next. We drank 30-day-old juice as part of an experiment. Got your attention yet?

It all started when we chanced upon a juice brand which claimed to have a freshness storage period of a month. Jussu Juice is a cold pressured juice manufacturer in Malaysia and their juices are made through the process of High Pressure Processing.

What this does is produce a cold pressed juice which has never been heated and it’s an environmentally-friendly process which maintains the original taste and colour of fruits and vegetables. The process also helps to keep the freshness of the juice for up to 30 days by keeping the bacteria within a safe level. Through this technology, Jussu Juice is able to produce juices that has a longer shelf life as compared to other cold pressed juices out there.

Noting Jussu Juice’s 30 day freshness storage period, we decided to put it to the test.

To add a little bit of fun to the experiment, we got juices from other major cold pressed juice brands in Malaysia and recorded their collective changes throughout the month as well. It is important to note though that these juices do not claim to have a best by date of a month. In this article, they are merely used as a visual comparison against Jussu Juice. Besides, who doesn’t enjoy watching juices gradually going bad over time?

For the experiment, the cold pressed juice brands used were Jussu Juice, Juice D’ Fruitz, LifeJuice and La Juiceria. All of the juices were kept refrigerated for 5 weeks and were only taken out from the fridge once a week for several minutes as we noted the changes that has occurred.

And so, the experiment begins!

Week 1

Jussu Juice

  • Appeared cloudy, but upon shaking, returned to normal juice consistency.

Juice D’ Fruitz

  • Passion fruit seeds has sunk to the bottom of the bottle for the Tropical Glory drink.

LifeJuice

  • The passion fruit seeds from the Pasion Digestive Aid drink has sunk to the bottom of the bottle.
  • Slight sedimentation can be observed at the bottom of both bottles.

La Juiceria

  • Juices did not appear to have a cloudy consistency.

Week 2

Jussu Juice

  • Slight cloudiness can be seen in both drinks, but upon shaking the bottles, the juices returned to a normal juice consistency.

Juice D’ Fruitz

  • The passion fruit seeds within the Tropical Glory drink has risen to the top of the bottle, just below the bottle cap.
  • Both juices appear slightly murky with some sedimentation at the bottom of the bottles.

LifeJuice

  • Both drinks have a clear appearance, save for the heavy sedimentation at the bottom of the bottle.
  • Slight moulding can be observed within the bottle of the Pasion Digestive Aid drink.

La Juiceria

  • Both juices had a cloudy appearance and there is heavier sedimentation at the bottom of both bottles, as compared to the previous week.

Week 3

  • The fridge began to stink of rotten fruits.

Jussu Juice

  • Both juices had a slightly cloudy appearance.

Juice D’ Fruitz

  • Both bottles had expanded slightly due to fermentation of the juice.

LifeJuice

  • The sedimentation at the bottom of the bottles had a darker appearance and the mould is slightly thicker than the week before.

La Juiceria

  • Both juices had a slightly darker appearance.

Week 4

  • All of the bottles have a sticky feel to them.

Jussu Juice

  • The sedimentation thickened slightly in the orange Fuel drink.

Juice D’ Fruitz

  • Both bottles had expanded more, as compared to the previous week.

LifeJuice

  • Mould appearred to have filled the bottles almost completely.

La Juiceria

  • Both juices had an unnatural appearance, in terms of its colour.

Week 5

  •  The stench in the fridge had reached an all-time high. We got evil glares from our co-workers.

Jussu Juice

  • Sedimentation has now filled almost 1/4 of the bottle.

Juice D’ Fruitz

  • Bottles have expanded at an alarming rate over the past week and by touching it alone, we feared it might leak, or worse: explode.

LifeJuice

  • The Pasion Digestive Aid drink has turned an unnatural yellow shade. There is also a significant change in colour for the Salad In A Bottle Fat Burner drink which has taken on a rusty brown shade.

La Juiceria

  • There appears to be no significant changes in the level of sedimentation as compared to the previous week.

Time For The Taste Test

By the 4th and 5th week, we received glares from other co-workers whenever we took the juices out from the fridge to note its changes. It’s clear that the stench and the appearance of the juices were nasty. Will we do this experiment again? Probably not. The stench in the fridge is not something we would gladly go through again, thank you very much.

Now the time has arrived for us to finally drink the juices. I personally did not taste Jussu Juice’s juices but my colleagues did the deed for me. Yes, I did fear for their safety and observed them closely as they drank the juices. No, they did not die.

In fact, they mentioned how the juices did not taste odd albeit the slightly cloudy appearance. What was interesting to note though was how Jussu Juice did not alter much in appearance throughout the experiment, as compared to the rest. Just remember to give the bottle a good shake prior to consumption and you’re good to go. The flavour of the drinks were still strong and perhaps the only thing that was lacking was the smell—both drinks only had a subtle smell to it.

Final Verdict

Most cold pressed juices have a best by date of anywhere between a day to a week and that’s what makes Jussu Juice stand out from the rest. In fact, it’s pretty much standing between the gap of fresh cold pressed juices and UHT fruit juices bought from the supermarket. This would then make High Pressure Processing cold pressed fruit juices an ideal option for those who wish to have fresh juices but do not wish to drink them immediately.

The only thing which was lacking in the Jussu Juice juices was its smell and if you are able to look past this, it can be a drink worth trying. As long as the drink remains unopened, it is able to withstand 30 days. Best part is, you don’t have to worry about consuming them immediately and can have them within the month.
