Gold has long since been associated with the highest of classes and the richest of society. Sure, having gold jewelry jangling on your wrists and sparkling around your neck is a sign of opulence and wealth, but would you even go so far as to eat gold? On an ice cream? That costs RM10 per cone??
The trend of gold leaf ice cream started in Japan (Where else, right?) and has slowly been making its waves around the Internet. Popular ice cream franchise in town, MilkCow, introduced their own gold leaf-topped ice cream in May, but unfortunately it’s no longer available as it was a limited edition offering.
But worry not, because you can still get your shiny golden ice cream fix in KL (from a pasar malam, no less!). A stall in Taman Connaught’s pasar malam in Cheras is selling chocolate and vanilla soft serve ice cream cones topped with edible gold leaf. The gold is imported from Japan, the birthplace of this quirky dessert. For RM10 a pop, you can indulge yourself in a luxurious sweet treat after roaming the market all night.

According to people who have eaten said ice cream, the gold leaf is actually tasteless. I guess you should only get this dessert purely for its aesthetic value, instead of its taste. Yes, the ice cream cone looks stunning and the shiny golden foil wrapped around the soft serve is a feast for the eyes, but is it really worth it to pay RM10 for a pretty Instagram post, when you can get 10 tried-and-true McDonald’s ice cream cones instead??

Seeing as the Taman Connaught pasar malam is considered to be the longest in Malaysia, it’s no wonder that they have such unique food items like this one. Any of you willing to fork out the cash to try eat some gold leaf? Let us know if you have and what you thought of it!
