One minute into watching Shawn Lee beatboxing away, you’d know for sure that this guy doesn’t do it for anything other than the love for it. It’s clear that his passion for beatboxing runs deep and this passion transfers to everything else he does in life. Whether it’s car drifting, making YouTube videos for his subscriber fan base of 185k or solving Rubix cubes while spitting a rhyme, he’s doing it all because he just enjoys it that much.

Discover KL gets up close and personal with Shawn Lee as he shares on everything from his “talent” in cooking up instant noodles, how he maintains composure when competing against other national champions, and the last life-changing book he’s read.

1. How did you learn to beatbox?

YouTube!

2. What is the ultimate misconception about beatboxers?

People always think we’ve got something to do with martial arts…until we explain what beatboxing is. Haha.

3. Who is your beatboxing idol?

Killa Kela and Joel Turner.

4. What other talents do you have besides beatboxing?

Drifting, video editing, speed cubing, acting, cooking instant noodles haha. Is that a talent? Lol.

5. How do you maintain composure when competing against other national champions?

I just wanted to have fun and do my best. That is what kept me calm. It wasn’t about winning.

6. Have you ever missed a beat on stage before?

Of course. We might sound like robots but we are human and still make errors. When I make a mistake, I’ll always improvise on stage. That’s the beauty about beatboxing. I can improvise it anytime.

7. Ever tried beatboxing to a slow, “jiwang” song before? 😛

Yes, but I don’t wanna be jiwang all the time haha.

8. What does a day in the life of Shawn Lee look like?

You can check out my YouTube channel on that. I’ve been doing daily vlogs for about 9 months now. YES, EVERYDAY! 🙂 Haha. In summary, I am constantly on the move.

9. Would you rather go a day without your phone or without beatboxing at all?

https://www.instagram.com/p/BHUEUV-ggtm

Without beatboxing. Cause I’m not constantly beatboxing all the time haha. I only do it at the right time. It can be a little bit annoying to others when you keep spitting on them haha. I’m a considerate beatboxer.

10. You mentioned that you’re not a book person, but what’s the most impactful book you’ve ever read?

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.

11. If you could change the past or take a peek into the future, which would you choose?

Neither. What’s in the past, just leave it. What’s in the future, surprise me! What’s life when you know what’s gonna happen? By knowing the future, I’m also altering the timeline. What you saw in the future is already there because you’ve seen the future. Geddit? Lol.

12. What is the best memory you’ve experienced thus far?

Making my first single, MADLife.

13. What qualities do you look for in a significant other?

Tough question. There is no list, but maybe just someone I can click with.

14. What was the funniest pick-up-line you’ve ever used on a girl?

Did it hurt? ‘Cause it was a long fall from Heaven.

15. Did it work?

Nope. 😛
