Times Higher Education is a portal which ranks universities across the globe and the list of top 100 universities in Asia for 2017 was recently released. Universiti Malaya is ranked 59th place in the list, whereas Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) placed within the top 120 universities, and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) placed within the top 130 universities.

The universities are ranked based on 5 different categories and they are the:

  • Teaching (the learning environment)
  • Research (volume, income and reputation)
  • Citations (research influence)
  • International outlook (staff, students and research)
  • Industry income (knowledge transfer)

Other universities that made it into the ranking included University of Tokyo (7th place), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (17th place) and Hanyang University (38th place). The university that got the first place position for 2 years in a row is the National University of Singapore.
